This month's SVTC talk will be on Zoom: see calendar details.
November's talk on Ultraman Canada covers two viewpoints: The experience of training for and competing in a three day Ultraman triathlon, and how to successfully coach an athlete to prepare them for their first ultra-endurance event.
Coach Wes Fornes is a member of SVTC. He stumbled into coaching when his first athlete won the Collegiate National Triathlon Championships and received her pro card soon afterward. From there, it was a whirlwind of learning how to take a runner and make her phenomenal at swimming and cycling. Coaching triathlon at the pro level greatly accelerated his knowledge of the sport. He has taken his skills from coaching elites to now applying them for wider range of triathletes; from back-of-the-pack athletes to age groupers wanting to qualify at world championship races.
Wes coached Heidi Buttery for her first Ultraman race this August. Heidi is a triathlete, who resides in the Bay Area with her son, husband and their very lazy Bernese Mountain Dog. She has competed in many local and international races, which includes three full-distance Ironman Triathlon finishes in Coeur d'Alene (Idaho) Cozumel (Mexico) and Santa Rosa (California). In July of 2022, she became an official finisher of Ultraman Canada, a 3-day stage race, held in Penticton, British Columbia. This race covers 515 kilometers of swimming, cycling and running with a 12-hour cutoff for each day. In the years since it began, in 1993, there have been only 226 participants (166 male /60 females) who successfully completed this challenge. She is a nutritionist, spin instructor, mental health advocate, certified public accountant and a wannabe DJ.
